Grounds & Gardens
The College campus gardens all provide ordered open space within the fourteenth and later centuries' buildings, these include: Walled gardens, courtyard areas, formal cloisters, large estate style gardens, rose and herbaceous borders, large yew hedges, modern style planted areas and a traditional planted headmasters garden. Along with many other interesting gardens.
There is a Grounds and Gardens staff of nine overseen by the Head Groundsman. Five grounds staff are responsible for the sports playing fields, cricket, football, tennis, etc. A staff of two are responsible for all the formal on-site gardens in addition to the general campus grounds and a further two gardeners deal with the ten boarding house gardens away from the main campus Each of these gardens are approximately three quarters of an acre, there is always something requiring attention. In general, each boarding house has half a day's work a week and when big projects require more help, other grounds/gardens staff are called upon.
Role and Responsibilities
Tend and care to the gardens of Winchester College to a high standard including improving and creating areas. Tasks will vary on a daily basis but will include:
* Using the correct techniques in pruning, plant care and maintenance to ensure gardens look their best all year round.
* Preparing areas to a high standard for the many school events.
* Working alongside the boarding house gardeners as they maintain and improve the areas they work in.
* Assisting in the preparation, design and planting of rockeries, herbaceous borders and shrubberies.
* Lawn maintenance and cultivation.
* The use and maintenance of hand tools and basic light machinery.
* The use of mowers, strimmer's and leaf blowers.
* Applying chemicals where appropriate.
* Keeping gardens, thoroughfares and footpaths clear and free from litter at all times.
* Carrying out gritting, salt spreading, snow clearing as necessary.
* Being aware of health and safety requirements noting that all duties must be carried out to comply with current Health and Safety at Work legislation.
Qualifications and Personal Attributes
The successful applicant must be an enthusiastic and hardworking individual, who is prepared to make the very best of this opportunity to develop the skills of a Gardener. The successful candidate must fulfil all requirements to attend a relevant gardening course at a College of Further Education. A clear aptitude for this skill must have been demonstrated.
Candidates should be aware of the physical nature of the position, and the requirement to work in all weather conditions. This positon requires the use of powered machinery and working at heights.
Terms of Service
Start Date
September 2019. This position will initially be for a twenty four month period.
Hours of work
The post-holder will work an average of 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4.30pm in the winter and 8.00am - 5.00pm in the summer.
Salary
This will be GBP 16,286 per annum and will be paid monthly, to a specified bank account in 12 equal payments. Salary levels are reviewed on the 1st September annually.
Holiday
The College leave year runs from 1st September to 31st August. The post holder will be entitled to the statutory 28 days holiday per annum which includes bank holidays. Bank/Public holidays occurring during term time are deemed normal working days. All leave must be taken with the prior agreement of the Line Manager. Leave may not be taken from 1st April until term ends the beginning of July.
Uniform
Certain items of uniform will be provided, including polo shirts, sweatshirts and safety footwear. All items must be kept clean and in good repair; laundering will be the responsibility of the individual.
Pension and Life Cover
After three months' employment, employees will be auto-enrolled into the College's pension scheme according to legislative thresholds. Those who are not eligible for auto-enrolment may still elect to join the College's pension scheme. Initially, when joining the College's pension scheme, employees will become a member of the College's Group Personal Pension Plan (GPP). For this Plan, known as Tier 1, currently the employee contributes 5% and the employer 3%.
After nine months' membership of the Tier 1 plan employees may opt to join Tier 2, which is also a Group Personal Pension Plan but contribution rates are 5% from the employee and 9% from the College. Employees in Tier 1 automatically qualify for a Life Cover of 2 times salary. On entry to Tier 2 Life Cover changes to 4 times salary.
Enhanced Disclosure and other Pre-employment checks
Winchester College is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children at the school. Therefore, this appointment will be subject to a successful Enhanced Disclosure and Barring check. This will provide details of convictions, reprimands, warnings, cautions and bind overs as per the DBS filtering guidance. A policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders, and information about DBS filtering, is available upon request from the HR Department if required. The college may approach previous employers to seek relevant experience or qualifications, in addition to obtaining references provided by the candidate.
