Catering Department
The Catering department reports to the Chief Operating Officer. It is run by the Head of Catering and Hospitality. The College does not have a centralised dining room and each of the eleven boarding house runs its own kitchen which caters for about 70 boys and 10 members of staff. We employ nearly 30 Head Chefs and Chefs along with many Kitchen and Dining Room Assistants. During the course of a day the Catering team produce nearly 2,500 meals all from scratch and from fresh ingredients.
In addition to this, we cater for many functions, both for internal and external clients. The Catering team working in College Kitchen report through the Chef Manager, to the Head of Catering & Hospitality. There are two Senior Sous Chefs, two Sous Chefs, and two Chef De Parties who are supported by three Kitchen Assistants and two packed meals staff.
Responsibilities
The Packed Meals Assistant is part of a small team working in College Kitchen and will be expected to prepare the required number of packed and plated meals, for pupils, sporting events, meetings and, events, all in line with the new requirements for the UK Food Information (Amendment) 2019, commonly referred to as ‘Natasha’s Law.’
He/she will also have responsibilities to support the daily routine of College life, including the provision of all meals in term-time for 70 Scholars, the Master in College and his guests, and for more formal occasions, whether these are part of the College’s history and tradition or for external events held here.

The successful applicant must be well organised and should have recent experience in the catering industry with an excellent attention to detail and a pride in their work.

The successful candidate will take up his/her duties as soon as possible.
Salary
The salary for the term time position (38.5 weeks per year) is £16,786 per annum.
The salary for the full time position (52 weeks per year) is £22,672 per annum.
Hours of Work
We have both term time and full time positions avaliable.
Both positions are for 40 hours per week between the hours of 7am to 7pm which includes weekends. The incumbent will be expected to work longer hours in busy periods, taking time off in lieu when possible, with prior agreement with the Head of Catering & Hospitality.
Holidays
The College leave year runs from 1 September to 31 August. This position will be entitled to the statutory holiday requirements. These are presently 28 days. Any Public Bank Holiday occurring during term time is deemed to be a normal working day.
All leave must be taken by prior arrangement with the Catering and Hospitality Manager. Due to the nature of the role, holiday periods may be prescribed; the designated dates will fall during the College holidays and will be advised as far in advance as possible.
Probation and Notice Periods
The first four months of employment will be a probationary period. During this time conduct and performance will be reviewed. The College may extend the probationary period if it is deemed to be required. During the probationary period the notice required to terminate employment will be one week (by either the employee or employer). The notice will increase upon the successful completion of the probationary period to one month.
Pension and Life Cover
On employment, employees will be auto-enrolled into the College’s pension scheme according to legislative thresholds. Those who are not eligible for auto-enrolment may still elect to join the College’s pension scheme. Initially, when joining the College’s pension scheme, employees will become a member of the College’s Group Personal Pension Plan (GPP). For this Plan, known as Tier 1, the employee contributes 5% and the employer 3%.
After nine months’ membership of the Tier 1 plan employees may opt to join Tier 2, which is also a Group Personal Pension Plan and the contributions are 5% from the employee and a 9% contribution from the College. Employees in Tier 1 automatically qualify for a Life Cover of 2 times salary. On entry to Tier 2 Life Cover changes to 4 times salary.
Enhanced Disclosure and other Pre-employment checks
Winchester College is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children at the school. Therefore, this appointment will be subject to a successful Enhanced Disclosure and Barring check. This will provide details of convictions, reprimands, warnings, cautions and bind overs as per the DBS filtering guidance. The college may approach previous employers to seek relevant experience or qualifications, in addition to obtaining references provided by the candidate.
