Duncan Louis Stewart Fellow in Natural History
Job description
Applications are invited for the Fellowship, which is tenable for two years from 1 January 2020 but could be for longer.
This unique and inspiring opportunity to join Winchester College as the Duncan Louis Stewart Fellow in Natural History was established in 2016 in memory of Wykehamist Duncan Stewart, a passionate
advocate of natural history, with the aim
of promoting an interest in all aspects of natural history throughout the school. The Fellow will join the academic staff of the school and will work with the Biology, Geography, Art and other departments to engender in pupils a deeper knowledge of and respect for ecology, the environment and the natural world. This will also include the Div programme (see below), organising lectures, practical excursions and expeditions, and it is recognised that the impact of this post will be felt well in to the future and beyond Winchester's doors.
The DLS Fellow will make use of the school's extensive collections and resources to promote knowledge among pupils of our place in the local environment of Hampshire and of the greater world around us. The Fellow will develop contacts and collaboration with Hampshire and Isle of Wight conservation groups, organise speakers to the Natural History Society and the College, arrange appropriate placements for interested pupils, and lead study trips in the UK and abroad during school holidays.
The Fellow will present natural history materials through the school's "Div" programme, and will be expected to give an annual lecture on work undertaken. Div is at the heart of the education we offer. It defines the liberal character of Winchester academic life. Pupils engage in discussion and debate, and embrace the idea of learning for its own sake, unrestrained by any examination syllabus.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES and PRIORITIES
* Work with academic departments and those who teach Div on any natural history related projects and classes
* Promote and advertise natural history in the boarding houses and school departments, and encourage greater membership to the Natural History Society (NHS)
* Develop natural history projects within the area of the school, such as:
o camera traps and remote observation
o publicising and keeping accurate records of findings
o developing the Biology garden at Science School and continue the ongoing pond project
o maximise the Natural History potential of the school grounds and the River Itchen
* Maintain links with local wildlife organisations and support the Head of Community Service in working with the wider community
* With the support of the Master in Charge of the NHS, plan and organise the annual NHS tour
* Alongside the Master in Charge of the NHS, plan and organise NHS weekly activities and trips
* In partnership with the Biology Department, maintain a range of interesting organisms and help with their upkeep
* Oversee the care of the school's NHS collection of preserved specimens, including their cataloguing and storage
* With support from the NHS committee, plan and coordinate the annual Duncan Louis Stewart lecture by a high profile naturalist
The successful candidate will work with the NHS, and will occasionally be required to work at weekends during term-time and on extended immersion and trips further afield throughout the year. He/she will be present in Winchester for most NHS weekly sessions in term time. In addition he/she will be proactive in generating contact time with pupils in houses and academic departments.
He/she will lead Community Service activities with local primary schools in the Biology labs and outside, as agreed with the Head of Community Service.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
* Extensive knowledge and experience of wildlife and practical study of natural history
* The ability to enthuse, inspire and stimulate interest in young people and convey this knowledge effectively
* Be a proactive person able to work alone and generate ideas and put them in to practice effectively
* Be a very good communicator able to converse with a wide range of people
It is also expected that the DLS Fellow will have a wealth of knowledge and experience with wildlife and also have good contacts with wildlife organisations globally.
