To support the Estate Bursar primarily by means of technical backup in the management and upkeep of the Listed and Ancient Buildings within the school campus.
The Works Department
The school has in its care an extraordinary range of buildings from chapels and classrooms to a swimming pool and science laboratories; from the fourteenth century to the twenty-first. The list embraces 11 Boarding Houses and over 100 staff houses.
This built environment is maintained and improved by the Works Department. Under the direction of the Estate Bursar, who also manages the capital projects, the Works Manager has a staff of about 25 operatives and is supported by a Services Manager and a Planned Works Manager.
Members of staff have a great affection for the school and 18 of its number have worked here in excess of 10 years. Combined with this affection, their exemplary skills produce a comprehensive and reliable service to the school community.
The department operates out of a purpose built facility in Kingsgate Road. The building, completed in 1994, includes a well-equipped joinery workshop.
Responsibilities
The post holder will be a direct report to the Estate Bursar but will work closely with the Works Department, his management team and other members of the College as required. Particular focus will be on:
•Preparation and updating of “Ancient building stock” condition surveys
•Assisting with the monitoring and/or administration of works to Listed and Ancient Buildings as directed.
•Providing architectural and contract administration services in connection with the on-going maintenance of the above and all building stock.
•Providing technical back up, specifications and details for primarily Heritage Work around the campus.
•Establishing the extent of necessary works in association with the Ancient Buildings and producing report for the same to the Estate Bursar.
•Assisting with some of the footwork that will be required by the Estate Development Plan, such as collation of information currently on the College systems, packaging and passing of same over to consultants, general support , fact finding and research etc.
•Preparation of designs for modifications, including establishing the detailed brief, scheme designs, budget costing and full working drawings.
•Preparing and managing applications for statutory consents for works.
•Management of consultants as appropriate.
•Preparation of specifications for works to support Works Department and monitoring adherence to the same.
•Administration of project’s, repairs and Works contracts as required.
•Inviting tenders, quotations and priced schedules of work.
•Development of layout plans for buildings without record drawings and the maintaining of our current archives both drawn and written.
•CAD work as required (Auto CAD Lt 18).
•Take on other duties as directed by the Estate Bursar in support of the overall management of the school’s built estate.
•Standing in for Estate Bursar as directed.
Personal Qualities

•Demonstrable practical experience within a surveying or architectural discipline of the tasks required, in particular experience in the knowledge of traditional, listed and Ancient Buildings.
•Sound technical building /constructional knowledge, in traditional construction.

Start date
It is hoped that the successful candidate will be able to take up their duties as soon as possible subject to any notice period due to a current employer.
Salary
Circa £45,000 (gross) per annum. Salary is paid monthly, in arrears, to a nominated bank account in 12 equal payments. Salary levels are reviewed on 1 September annually.
Hours of Work
This is a full time post, 8.30am – 5.00pm Monday to Friday.
Holidays
The College leave year runs from 1 September to 31 August. The position will be entitled to the statutory entitlement of paid holiday per annum, which is currently 28 days including Bank Holidays. Bank Holidays occurring during term time are deemed as normal working days.
Probation and Notice Periods
The first four calendar months of employment will be a probationary period. During this period conduct and performance will be reviewed. The College may extend the probationary period if it is deemed to be required. During the probationary period the notice required to terminate employment will be one week (by either the employee or employer). The notice period will increase to one month upon the successful completion of the probationary period.
Pension and Life Cover
On employment, employees are auto-enrolled into the College’s pension scheme according to legislative thresholds. Those who are not eligible for auto-enrolment may still elect to join the College’s pension scheme.
Initially, when joining the College’s pension scheme, employees will become a member of the College’s Group Personal Pension Plan (GPP). For this Plan, known as Tier 1, the employee contributes 5% and the employer 3%.
After 9 month’s membership of the Tier 1 plan employees may opt to join Tier 2, which is also a Group Personal Pension Plan and the contributions are 5% from the employee and a 9% contribution from the College.
Employees in Tier 1 automatically qualify for a Life Cover of 2 times salary. On entry to Tier 2 Life Cover changes to 4 times salary.
Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Check
Winchester College is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children at the school. Therefore, this appointment will be subject to a successful Enhanced Disclosure Barring check. This will provide details of convictions, reprimands, warnings, cautions and bind overs as per the DBS filtering guidance. A policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders, and information about DBS filtering, is available upon request from the HR Department if required. The college may approach previous employers to seek verification, in addition to obtaining references provided by the candidate.
