Job description
The Works Department
The College has a considerable building stock comprising a number of the original medieval buildings together with subsequent additions as the College has expanded through its 600 years of existence.
The Works Department of Winchester College is a valued and respected support service at the very heart of the school with a reputation
for excellent quality and friendly staff.
Main Purpose
To develop the practical skills in Electrical Maintenance, in association with an appropriate apprentice training course. To support our existing team in carrying out electrical work required in the maintenance, improvement and alteration of the College's varied building stock.
Be part of a small team of electricians within a busy Works Department under the supervision of the Lead Electrician. The mentor and immediate supervisor will be the Lead Electrician, working under the direction of the Works Manager.
In order to support the departments wide ranging duties, the apprentice electrician will require a willingness to work beyond own trade.
The successful candidate will work towards a Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard - Electrotechnical taught through a combination of on- and off-the-job training with an option of either day or block release over a minimum duration of 42 months.
The apprenticeship will cover a range of core requirements to become an Electrotechnical Engineer and develop apprentices' knowledge, skills and behaviours. There will be a strong focus to develop apprentices technical knowledge and skills to include:
-Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for the termination and connection of conductors, cables and cords in electrical systems
-Understand and apply the practices and procedures for the preparation and installation of wiring systems and electrotechnical equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
-Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for the inspection, testing, commissioning and certification of electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
-Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for diagnosing and correcting electrical faults in electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
-Understand and apply the electrical principles associated with the design, building, installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems
-Oversee and organise the work environment.
Qualifications and Personal Attributes
The successful applicant must be an enthusiastic and hardworking individual, who is prepared to make the very best of this opportunity to develop the skills of an Electrician. The successful candidate must fulfil all requirements to attend a relevant electrical course at a College of Further Education. A clear aptitude for this skill must have been demonstrated.
Candidates should be aware of the physical nature of the position, and the requirement to work under all weather conditions, working at heights will also be required once training has been given.
Terms of Service
Start Date
September 2019. This position will initially be for a forty two month period.
Hours of work
The post-holder will work an average of 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4.30pm in the winter and 8.00am - 5.00pm in the summer.
Salary
This will be circa GBP 17,000 per annum and will be paid monthly, to a specified bank account in 12 equal payments. Salary levels are reviewed on the 1st September annually.
Holidays
The College leave year runs from 1st September to 31st August. The post holder will be entitled to the statutory 28 days holiday per annum which includes bank holidays. Bank/Public holidays occurring during term time are deemed normal working days. All leave must be taken with the prior agreement of the Line Manager.
Uniform
Certain items of uniform will be provided, including polo shirts, sweatshirts and safety footwear. All items must be kept clean and in good repair; laundering will be the responsibility of the individual.
Pension and Life Cover
After three months' employment, employees will be auto-enrolled into the College's pension scheme according to legislative thresholds. Those who are not eligible for auto-enrolment may still elect to join the College's pension scheme. Initially, when joining the College's pension scheme, employees will become a member of the College's Group Personal Pension Plan (GPP). For this Plan, known as Tier 1, currently the employee contributes 5% and the employer 3%.
After nine months' membership of the Tier 1 plan employees may opt to join Tier 2, which is also a Group Personal Pension Plan but contribution rates are 5% from the employee and 9% from the College. Employees in Tier 1 automatically qualify for a Life Cover of 2 times salary. On entry to Tier 2 Life Cover changes to 4 times salary.
Enhanced Disclosure and other Pre-employment checks
Winchester College is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children at the school. Therefore, this appointment will be subject to a successful Enhanced Disclosure and Barring check. This will provide details of convictions, reprimands, warnings, cautions and bind overs as per the DBS filtering guidance. A policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders, and information about DBS filtering, is available upon request from the HR Department if required. The college may approach previous employers to seek relevant experience or qualifications, in addition to obtaining references provided by the candidate.
