Role
Winchester College has eleven boarding houses which all house around 65-70 boys and supporting staff. During term time, the Handyperson will work in one of these boarding houses and will complete everyday maintenance tasks and support the cleaning team in their duties in the house. During the school holiday periods the Handyperson will work in our Works department and will take on a more general maintenance role within the campus.
Person Specification
The Handyperson should be able to work as part of a small team with responsibility for the cleanliness and general upkeep of the house. The Handyperson will also be expected to work unsupervised in maintaining the buildings and cleanliness of areas allocated to them and to effect minor repairs to fixtures and fittings.
The College has a well-qualified Works Department that is responsible for doing major work or effecting repairs that may affect the safety of staff or pupils e.g. most electrical work or repairs. During school holiday periods the Handyperson will be part of the Works team giving support where needed.
The successful applicant must be physically capable of undertaking the work required, including being able to use a ladder and shift heavy items, be energetic and communicate well.
Responsibilities
During term time, the Handyperson will work in a boarding house together with a small team of house staff under the day-to-day supervision of the Housekeeper Matron with support when required from the Domestic Services Supervisor and Works Department. The Head of Department is the Housemaster. The main duties are as follows:
During school holiday times the Handyperson will report to the Works Manager and will take on a general maintenance role within the Works Department.

This position has flexibility to be either full-time or part-time.
Salary
The FTE salary for this position is £21,621
Holidays
The College leave year runs from 1st September to 31st August. The Handyperson will be entitled to the statutory number of days leave pro rata per annum; any Public or Bank Holiday falling in term-time is deemed to be a normal working day.
All holiday must be taken outside of the school term.
Pension and Life Cover
On employment, employees will be auto-enrolled into the College’s pension scheme according to legislative thresholds. Those who are not eligible for auto-enrolment may still elect to join the College’s pension scheme. Initially, when joining the College’s pension scheme, employees will become a member of the College’s Group Personal Pension Plan (GPP). For this Plan, known as Tier 1, the employee contributes 5% and the employer 3%.
After nine months’ membership of the Tier 1 plan employees may opt to join Tier 2, which is also a Group Personal Pension Plan and the contributions are 5% from the employee and a 9% contribution from the College. Employees in Tier 1 automatically qualify for a Life Cover of 2 times salary. On entry to Tier 2 Life Cover changes to 4 times salary.
Probation and Notice Periods
The first four months of employment will be a probationary period. During this time conduct and performance will be reviewed. The College may extend the probationary period if it is deemed to be required. During the probationary period the notice required to terminate employment will be one week (by either the employee or employer). The notice will increase upon the successful completion of the probationary period
Enhanced Disclosure and other Pre-employment checks

This will provide details of convictions, reprimands, warnings, cautions and bind overs as per the DBS filtering guidance. The college may approach previous employers to seek relevant experience or qualifications, in addition to obtaining references provided by the candidate.
