Catering Assistant (full-time)
Job description
The Catering Department
The Catering department is run by the Head of Catering and Hospitality, supported by three line managers. The College does not have a centralised dining room and each boarding house runs its own kitchen which caters for about 70 boys and 10 members of staff. We employ nearly 30 Head Chefs and Chefs along with many Kitchen and Dining Room
Assistants. During the course of a day the Catering team produces nearly 2,500 meals all from scratch and from fresh ingredients!
In addition to this we also cater for many functions, both for internal and external clients. The Functions team is led by the Functions Manager, assisted by Supervisors and Stewards (Catering Assistants). The permanent team is supported when required by casual staff.
College Hall and the Wardens Lodgings
College Hall is the medieval dining hall in which the pupils in College (the scholars' boarding house) the Master in College (Housemaster) and their guests take all their meals in term-time. It is also used for entertaining, both for formal College events and, in the holidays, those booked through Winchester College Enterprises, the department responsible for the commercial letting of school premises when not required for the pupils.
The Warden's Lodgings is the residence of the Warden (Chair of the school's Governing Body) whenever he is in Winchester. It is also used for meetings of the Fellows (the other members of the Governing Body), who may also stay there, and for other formal entertaining.
Role
The Functions team is led by the Functions Manager, who is assisted by two College Hall Supervisors, supported by five Catering Assistants. The permanent team is augmented when required by casual staff. The Catering Assistant will work primarily in College Hall as part of the small team that is responsible for looking after the day-to-day needs of the Master in College, the scholars and their guests, but will also assist in the Warden's Lodgings, the Headmaster's house and any other venue in which a catered service is to be provided.
The College maintains high standards of quality and presentation at all times, and it is important that the Catering Assistant is of smart personal appearance. Ideally, the successful applicant will have had experience within the catering/hospitality industry, but this is not essential as training can be provided.
Responsibilities
The main duties of the Catering Assistant are:
* Preparing College Hall for breakfast, lunch and tea for the scholars and other guests, serving the meals and clearing away afterwards;
* Assisting with the cleaning of College Hall, Hatches (the servery), plate wash, catering staff room, food lift, stairs etc.;
* Transporting equipment, setting-up/clearing away and serving at functions in other parts of the College;
* Implementing good catering and safe food hygiene practice, as directed;
* Attending any training that the School requires, including Health & Safety, Food Hygiene, Manual Handling, etc.;
* Such other tasks that may reasonably be required by the Catering Supervisor/Functions Manager.
Note: The role will involve lifting and moving catering equipment and supplies around the College campus; the post holder will be expected to be able to meet the reasonable physical requirements of this post.
Terms of Service
Start date
As soon as possible.
Salary
The starting salary will be circa GBP 17,900 (gross) per annum. Salary levels are reviewed on 1st September annually.
Hours of Work
40 hours per week, with some evening and weekend work.
Probation Period & Notice Period
The first four months of employment will be a probationary period. During this period the notice required by either party to terminate the employment will be one week, increasing to one calendar month on either side on completion of the probationary period.
Uniform and Food
Certain items of uniform and formal clothing will be provided, including a dress waistcoat and bow tie, and polo shirts and sweatshirts for everyday wear. The post-holder will be expected to provide his/her own black trousers/skirt and plain white formal shirts for larger functions. The College will provide non-slip plain black shoes. All items must be kept clean and in good repair; laundering will be the responsibility of the individual. The Catering Assistant is not entitled to food at the College's expense.
Holidays
The College holiday year runs from 1st September to 31st August. The Catering Assistant will be entitled to the statutory entitlement which is currently 28 days including Bank Holidays. Public holidays occurring during term-time are deemed normal working days. All holiday must be taken out of term time.
Pension and Life Cover
After 3 months' employment, employees will be auto-enrolled into the College's pension scheme according to legislative thresholds. Those who are not eligible for auto-enrolment may still elect to join the College's pension scheme.
Initially, when joining the College's pension scheme, employees will become a member of the College's Group Personal Pension Plan (GPP). For this Plan, known as Tier 1, the employee contributes 5% and the employer 3%.
After 9 month's membership of the Tier 1 plan employees may opt to join Tier 2, which is also a Group Personal Pension Plan and the contributions are 5% from the employee and a 9% contribution from the College.
Employees in Tier 1 automatically qualify for a Life Cover of 2 times salary. On entry to Tier 2 Life Cover changes to 4 times salary.
