Job description
Winchester College has eleven boarding houses which all house around 65-70 boys and supporting staff. The Handyperson will work in one of these boarding houses and will complete everyday maintenance tasks and support the cleaning team in their duties in the house.
Person Specification
The Handyperson should be able to work as part of a small team with responsibility
for the cleanliness and general upkeep of the house. The Handyperson will also be expected to work unsupervised in maintaining the buildings and cleanliness of areas allocated to them and to effect minor repairs to fixtures and fittings.
The College has a well-qualified Works Department that is responsible for doing major work or effecting repairs that may affect the safety of staff or pupils e.g. most electrical work or repairs.
The successful applicant must be physically capable of undertaking the work required, including being able to use a ladder and shift heavy items, be energetic and communicate well.
Responsibilities
The Handyperson will work together with a small team of house staff under the day-to-day supervision of the Housekeeper Matron with support when required from the Domestic Services Supervisor and Works Department. The Head of Department is the House Master. The main duties are as follows:
* To carry out general domestic duties, including the use of domestic machinery. This includes the cleaning of bathroom and toilet areas.
* To move and rearrange furniture, if required.
* To undertake minor running repairs of everyday wear and tear, as directed by the Housekeeper Matron.
* To lift and move reasonably heavy items such as cleaning equipment, bin bags, laundry bags.
* To work outside, when required, to maintain the cleanliness and appearance of House, for example ventilation grill and lanterns.
* To be responsible for day-to-day statutory Health & Safety and Fire Safety checks in the boarding house, and to report any inadequacies to the Head of Department who in turn will report on for action to be taken.
* To complete and maintain in a tidy fashion records of all safety checks and keep records for inspection purposes.
* To work at events in boarding house as required e.g. Winchester match, leaver's supper, end of term dinner.
* To undertake such additional work, which the Housekeeper Matron, Domestic Services Supervisor or Housemaster.

This position is for 20 hours per week, term-time only.
At the beginning and end of each term Handyperson will be required to work for two days to assist with deep cleaning and getting ready for new term.
Bank Holidays occurring during term time are regarded as normal working days.
Salary
GBP 10.19/hour, GBP 7,847/annum
Holidays
The College leave year runs from 1st September to 31st August. The Handyperson will be entitled to the statutory number of days leave pro rata per annum; any Public or Bank Holiday falling in term-time is deemed to be a normal working day.
All holiday must be taken outside of the school term.
Pension and Life Cover
After three months' employment, employees will be auto-enrolled into the College's pension scheme according to legislative thresholds. Those who are not eligible for auto-enrolment may still elect to join the College's pension scheme. Initially, when joining the College's pension scheme, employees will become a member of the College's Group Personal Pension Plan (GPP). For this Plan, known as Tier 1, the employee contributes 5% and the employer 3%.
After nine months' membership of the Tier 1 plan employees may opt to join Tier 2, which is also a Group Personal Pension Plan and the contributions are 5% from the employee and a 9% contribution from the College. Employees in Tier 1 automatically qualify for a Life Cover of 2 times salary. On entry to Tier 2 Life Cover changes to 4 times salary.
Probation and Notice Periods
The first four months of employment will be a probationary period. During this time conduct and performance will be reviewed. The College may extend the probationary period if it is deemed to be required. During the probationary period the notice required to terminate employment will be one week (by either the employee or employer). The notice will increase upon the successful completion of the probationary period.
Enhanced Disclosure and other Pre-employment checks
Winchester College is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children at the school. Therefore, this appointment will be subject to a successful Enhanced Disclosure and Barring check. This will provide details of convictions, reprimands, warnings, cautions and bind overs as per the DBS filtering guidance. A policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders, and information about DBS filtering, is available upon request from the HR Department if required. The college may approach previous employers to seek relevant experience or qualifications, in addition to obtaining references provided by the candidate.
