Apprentice IT Technician
Job description
The IT Department
The IT Department has responsibility for all of the College’s IT services and systems.
The team consists of a Head of Infrastructure, a Technical Analyst, a Project Manager, three Support Technicians and an IT Trainer and Business Analyst who all report into the Director of IT.
The team’s responsibilities involve supporting
and maintaining the College’s IT infrastructure, network, wireless network, devices, software and services, as well as designing and testing new technical solutions in line with the College’s IT Strategy and Policies.
The department is undergoing huge development as it moves towards a new phase of expansion, progress and growth.
Main Responsibilities
The Technician will work as an integral member of the IT Team, with the following principal duties:
To assist in the deployment of PC solutions, including the installation of approved software and configuration to agreed standards.
To perform regular maintenance and trouble shoot as necessary, College laptops and PC’s located in IT suites within the College and the Boarding Houses.
To maintain hardware and software inventories and monitor supply of consumables, advising the System Administrator of stock levels.
To gain familiarisation with software configurations specific to Winchester College and show a willingness to learn new applications and technologies.
To assist in:
Managing calls and enquiries from users in the event of network or PC problems.
Helping users, both boys and staff, with IT-related problems.
Diagnosing and rectifying PC faults (hardware and software)
Moving hardware to locations across the college campus
Liaising with external suppliers (arranging collections and returns)
Installation and Configuration of desktop devices.
Deployment of application and software installations.
Knowledge of Microsoft products and troubleshooting methods.
Knowledge of Apple Macintosh products and configuration.
Networking and network troubleshooting skills.
Configuration of audio visual equipment in teaching and event locations
Assist in the support of events and presentations outside of normal working hours
To undertake any other duties or one-off tasks at the reasonable request of the Systems Manager.
Personal Qualities
The Apprentice IT Technician will be a dedicated and mature individual who is a thorough, methodical and organised person capable of paying attention to detail and able to respond effectively and promptly to the needs of system users, both staff and pupils. The successful applicant should be an effective communicator and possess good interpersonal skills.
Salary
Salary will be £17,375 per annum and will be paid monthly, to specified bank account in 12 equal payments. Salary levels are reviewed on the 1st September annually.
Hours of Work
The IT office is manned between the hours of 8.00am and 6.00pm with the team covering the full hours on a rota basis. The IT Technician will be expected to work 8 hours/day with an hour for lunch Monday to Friday. In effect this means that the IT Technician will work either 8.00am – 5.00pm or 9.00am – 6.00pm. In addition, there is the expectation of Saturday morning cover during term time (32 weeks) on a one in four rota basis.
Holidays
The College leave year runs from 1 September to 31 August. This position will be entitled to the statutory holiday requirements. These are presently 28 days. Any Public Bank Holiday occurring during term time is deemed to be a normal working day. All leave must be taken by prior arrangement with the designated line manager and should be given with four weeks’ notice.
Probation and Notice Periods
The first four months of employment will be a probationary period. During this time conduct and performance will be reviewed. The College may extend the probationary period if it is deemed to be required. During the probationary period the notice required to terminate employment will be one week (by either the employee or employer). The notice will increase upon the successful completion of the probationary period.
Pension and Life Cover
After three months’ employment, employees will be auto-enrolled into the College’s pension scheme according to legislative thresholds. Those who are not eligible for auto-enrolment may still elect to join the College’s pension scheme. Initially, when joining the College’s pension scheme, employees will become a member of the College’s Group Personal Pension Plan (GPP). For this Plan, known as Tier 1, the employee contributes 5% and the employer 3%.
After nine months’ membership of the Tier 1 plan employees may opt to join Tier 2, which is also a Group Personal Pension Plan and the contributions are 5% from the employee and a 9% contribution
from the College. Employees in Tier 1 automatically qualify for a Life Cover of 2 times salary. On entry to Tier 2 Life Cover changes to 4 times salary.
Enhanced Disclosure and other Pre-employment checks
Winchester College is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children at the school. Therefore, this appointment will be subject to a successful Enhanced Disclosure and Barring check. This will provide details of convictions, reprimands, warnings, cautions and bind overs as per the DBS filtering guidance. A policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders, and information about DBS filtering, is available upon request from the HR Department if required. The college may approach previous employers to seek relevant experience or qualifications, in addition to obtaining references provided by the candidate.
