Apprentice Painter & Decorator
Job description
The Works Department
The College has a considerable building stock comprising a number of the original medieval buildings together with subsequent additions as the College has expanded through its 600 years of existence.
The Works Department of Winchester College is a valued and respected support service at the very heart of the school with a reputation
for excellent quality and friendly staff.
Apprentice Painter & Decorator
Main Purpose
To develop the practical skills in painting and decorating, in association with an appropriate apprentice training course. To support our existing team in carrying out painting and decorating work required in the maintenance, improvement and alteration of the College's varied building stock.
To be part of a small team of painters within a busy Works Department under the supervision of the Lead Painter. The mentor and immediate supervisor will be the Lead Painter, working under the direction of the Works Manager.
In order to support the departments wide ranging duties, the Apprentice Painter & Decorator will require a willingness to work beyond own trade.
The successful candidate will work towards a Level 2 or 3 Diploma in Painting & Decorating taught through a combination of on- and off-the-job training on block release over a duration of 18 to 30 months.
The Apprenticeship includes units relating to;
* Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms
* Preparing surfaces for decoration
* Applying paint systems by brush and roller
* Applying foundation and plain papers
* Producing specialist decorative finishes
* Applying and creating colour, erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms
* Applying hangings to walls and ceilings
* Producing specialist finishes for painted decorative work
* Producing specialist architectural finishes for decorative work
* Applying water-borne paint systems using airless equipment , and applying water-borne paint systems using high volume low pressure (HVLP).
At the end of the apprenticeship the successful candidate will have achieved a Level 2 Diploma in Painting & Decorating.
Qualifications and Personal Attributes
The successful applicant must be an enthusiastic and hardworking individual, who is prepared to make the very best of this opportunity to develop the skills of a Painter & Decorator. The successful candidate must fulfil all requirements to attend a relevant electrical course at a College of Further Education. A clear aptitude for this skill must have been demonstrated.
Candidates should be aware of the physical nature of the position, and the requirement to work under all weather conditions, working at heights will also be required once training has been given.
Terms of Service
Start Date
September 2019. This positon will initially be for an eighteen to thirty month period, depending on the qualification taken.
Hours of work
The post-holder will work an average of 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4.30pm in the winter and 8.00am - 5.00pm in the summer.
Salary
GBP 17,000(gross) per annum, paid monthly, to a specified bank account in 12 equal payments. Salary levels are reviewed on the 1st September annually.
Holidays
The College leave year runs from 1st September to 31st August. The post holder will be entitled to the statutory 28 days holiday per annum which includes bank holidays. Bank/Public holidays occurring during term time are deemed normal working days. All leave must be taken with the prior agreement of the Line Manager.
Uniform
Certain items of uniform will be provided, including polo shirts and sweatshirts. All items must be kept clean and in good repair; laundering will be the responsibility of the individual.
Probation and Notice Periods
The first four months of employment will be a probationary period. During this time conduct and performance will be reviewed. The College may extend the probationary period if it is deemed to be required. During the probationary period the notice required to terminate employment will be one week (by either the employee or employer). The notice will increase upon the successful completion of the probationary period.
Pension and Life Cover
After 3 months' employment, employees will be auto-enrolled into the College's pension scheme according to legislative thresholds. Those who are not eligible for auto-enrolment may still elect to join the College's pension scheme.
Initially, when joining the College's pension scheme, employees will become a member of the College's Group Personal Pension Plan (GPP). For this Plan, known as Tier 1, the employee contributes 5% and the employer 3%.
After 9 month's membership of the Tier 1 plan employees may opt to join Tier 2, which is also a Group Personal Pension Plan and the contributions are 5% from the employee and a 9% contribution from the College.
Employees in Tier 1 automatically qualify for a Life Cover of 2 times salary. On entry to Tier 2 Life Cover changes to 4 times salary.
Enhanced Disclosure and other Pre-employment Checks
Winchester College is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children at the school. Therefore, this appointment will be subject to a successful Enhanced Disclosure and Barring check. This will provide details of convictions, reprimands, warnings, cautions and bind covers as per the DBS filtering guidance.
