Minibus Driver
Job description
Responsibilities
The Minibus driver will work under the day-to-day management of the Transport Manager although overall responsibility for the operation of the minibus fleet lies with the Domestic Bursar.
The main duties are:
To drive boys and accompanying staff safely to and from pupils' sporting or academic or social trips or for other purposes, as the
need arises, in whatever transport has been designated for that journey. Occasionally a start or finish time might be at unsocial hours.
To drive lawfully, complying with health and safety legislation and any other guidelines that may be issued from time to time, and in consideration of the school's image and reputation.
To collect transport folder, keys, mobile phone and Sat Nav as necessary before each journey from the Transport Office and return them promptly after the vehicle has been parked in its allocated bay.
To ensure that all passengers wear their seat belts and that any luggage is securely stowed.
To report any defects or damage to the vehicle to the Transport Manager, immediately on returning from a trip.
To report any accidents to the Transport Manager and complete any relevant accident reports and insurance forms.
To ensure there is no smoking in or around the vehicles, whether driving or parked at the College or elsewhere.
To ensure the minibus is cleared of any luggage, personal items or litter after each journey and left in a reasonably clean condition.
To drive other College vehicles as and when required.
To undertake any other transport-related work which may reasonably be required from time to time.
Person Specification
Minibus drivers must have a full clean UK licence, including Category D1, and ideally MiDAS certification. Applicants must have experience of driving large vehicles; experience of driving with a trailer would be an advantage but is not essential. They will work as part of a team but may also need to travel on their own so must be capable of working unsupervised and be able and prepared to make decisions in an emergency situation. Ideally, applicants will have some knowledge of vehicle maintenance.
Hours of Work
A minibus driver's hours of work will vary according to demand and it is expected that he/she will work flexibly in response to the College's demands and timetable. There may be occasions, generally during holiday periods, when no work is available; the College has no obligation to provide a minimum number of hours on any given day or week. As such, minibus drivers are employed on a 'zero hours' contract. However, the Transport Manager will endeavour to allocate suitable work fairly, as and when available.
Uniform and Food
Certain items of uniform will be provided, including an outdoor jacket, polo shirts and sweatshirt. The post-holder should otherwise wear appropriate working dress.
Laundering of uniform items is the responsibility of the individual.
Staff are not entitled to meals at the College's expense.
Salary
Minibus drivers will be paid only for hours worked. The current rate is GBP 11.10/hour. This rate includes an amount to cover statutory holiday entitlement. Drivers will be required to complete a timesheet for all hours worked. Payment will be monthly, in arrears, to nominated bank. Salary levels are reviewed on 1 September annually.
Medical and Driving Conditions
Before undertaking any driving duties, drivers are required to undertake a practical driving assessment and safety briefing. They are expected to comply with current government standards in relation to fitness to drive. Any changes in health that are reportable to DVLA must be reported to Winchester College.
Licences will be inspected on an annual basis.
Drivers will be required to notify the Transport Manager immediately of any impending prosecutions or actual convictions related to traffic or speeding offences and, if on driving duty, be responsible for the proper and legal parking of the vehicle, being personally liable for any parking fines or any other penalty incurred for road traffic offences.
The school prohibits the use or storage of non-prescription drugs used for recreational purposes on any of its premises (including its vehicles) at any time. Alcohol may not be consumed within 12 hours of starting work nor during working hours.
Probation and Notice Periods
The first four months of employment will be a probationary period. During this time conduct and performance will be reviewed. The College may extend the probationary period if it is deemed to be required. During the probationary period the notice required to terminate employment will be one week (by either the employee or employer). The notice will increase upon the successful completion of the probationary period.
Enhanced Disclosure and other Pre-employment Checks
Winchester College is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children at the school. Therefore, this appointment will be subject to a successful Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. This will provide details of convictions, reprimands, warnings, cautions and bind covers as per the DBS filtering guidance. A policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders, and the information about DBS filtering, is available upon request from the HR Department if required. The college may approach previous employers to seek relevant experience or qualifications, in addition to obtaining references provided by the candidate.
Data Protection
Winchester College collects and processes relevant personal data as part of its everyday operations and is obliged to process it in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018.
The school is the Data Controller of this data under the Act and is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office; its registration number is Z5751669.
