Kitchen Assistant
Job description
The Catering Department
The Catering department is run by the Head of Catering and Hospitality, supported by three line managers. The College does not have a centralised dining room and each boarding house runs its own kitchen which caters for about 70 boys and 10 members of staff. We employ nearly 30 Head Chefs and Chefs along with many Kitchen and Dining Room
Assistants. During the course of a day the Catering team produces nearly 2,500 meals all from scratch and from fresh ingredients!
In addition to this we also cater for many functions, both for internal and external clients. The Functions team is led by the Functions Manager, assisted by Supervisors and Stewards (Catering Assistants). The permanent team is supported when required by casual staff.
Role and Person Specification
The Kitchen Assistant will work under the direction of the Head Chef. The Head Chef of the kitchen is the post holder's immediate supervisor, and the Catering Manager is the Head of Department. The Kitchen Assistant will be expected to have flexible availability, and cover for absent staff when required.
No formal catering qualifications are required just a willingness to learn and potentially develop into a chef. All successful applicants will be encouraged to progress and complete the NVQ Certificate Level 2 Food Preparation and Cooking. The successful candidate will be provided with relevant training in Health and Safety, including food hygiene. The ability to work quickly according to the requirements of the kitchen team is essential for this role.
Responsibilities
Working alongside other members of the boarding house kitchen team, the Kitchen Assistant will provide general support including (but not limited to):-
* Preparation of vegetables and other foodstuffs, as required.
* Following relevant instruction and risk assessments in order to maintain a hygienic and safe kitchen.
* Washing up, especially cooking pots and utensils.
* General cleaning of other catering equipment, e.g. trolleys.
* Routine daily cleaning of kitchen surfaces, equipment and walls and floor, and deep cleaning when required by the Head Chef.
* With line manager support, keep up to date and current with food hygiene and Health & Safety training.
* Provide any other support as may be reasonably requested from time to time by the Head Chef, Housekeeper, or Catering Manager.

This role is term-time only, working Monday to Saturday, 9.00am - 2.00pm. There may be the opportunity for evening shifts 5.00pm -7.00pm if required.
In addition, and depending on individual availability, hours may be available outside of term-time for events such as conferences and weddings. Non term-time work and availability should be discussed at the interview.
Salary
The current salary GBP 8.64 per hour. This will be paid monthly, to a nominated bank account in 12 equal payments. Salary levels are reviewed on 1 September annually and this position will next be reviewed in September 2019.
Holidays
The College holiday year runs from 1 September to 31 August. The Kitchen Assistant is entitled to the statutory holidays which must be taken outside of term time. This entitlement is taken into account in the salary offered, the monthly salary includes an element for holiday pay. Bank Holidays occurring during term time are considered to be normal working days. Only in exceptional circumstances, with prior approval from the HR director on behalf of the Bursar, will leave be authorised during term time.
Probation and Notice Periods
The first four calendar months of employment will be a probationary period. During this period conduct and performance will be reviewed. The College may extend the probationary period if it is deemed to be required. During the probationary period the notice required to terminate employment will be one week (by either the employee or employer). The notice period will increase to one month upon the successful completion of the probationary period.
Pension and Life Cover
After 3 months' employment, employees will be auto-enrolled into the College's pension scheme according to legislative thresholds. Those who are not eligible for auto-enrolment may still elect to join the College's pension scheme.
Initially, when joining the College's pension scheme, employees will become a member of the College's Group Personal Pension Plan (GPP). For this Plan, known as Tier 1, the employee contributes 5% and the employer 3%.
After 9 month's membership of the Tier 1 plan employees may opt to join Tier 2, which is also a Group Personal Pension Plan and the contributions are 5% from the employee and a 9% contribution from the College.
Employees in Tier 1 automatically qualify for a Life Cover of 2 times salary. On entry to Tier 2 Life Cover changes to 4 times salary.
Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Check
Winchester College is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children at the school. Therefore, this appointment will be subject to a successful Enhanced Disclosure Barring check. This will provide details of convictions, reprimands, warnings, cautions and bind overs as per the DBS filtering guidance. A policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders, and information about DBS filtering, is available upon request from the HR Department if required. The college may approach previous employers to seek verification, in addition to obtaining references provided by the candidate.
