Kitchen & Food Delivery Assistant
Job description
THE CATERING DEPARTMENT
The Catering department is run by the Head of Catering and Hospitality who is supported by two managers. The College does not have a centralised dining room and each boarding house runs its own kitchen which caters for about 70 boys and guests. We employ nearly 30 Head Chefs and Chefs along with many Kitchen and Dining Room Assistants.
During the course of a day our Catering Department produces nearly 2,500 meals all from scratch and from fresh ingredients.
In addition to this we also cater for many functions, both for internal and external clients. The Functions team is led by the Functions Manager, who is assisted by Supervisors, and also Catering Assistants. The permanent team is supported when required by casual staff.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
Working in the College Catering Department, the post-holder will firstly report to the Head Chef and then to the Head of Catering & Hospitality.
No formal catering qualifications are required, just a willingness to learn and potentially develop into a chef. All successful applicants will be encouraged to progress and complete the NVQ Certificate Level 2 Food Preparation and Cooking. The successful candidate will be provided with relevant training in Health and Safety, including food hygiene. The ability to work quickly according to the requirements of the kitchen team is essential for this role.
The role will have two parts:
Catering/Kitchen work
* Helping to maintain cleanliness of College Kitchen and equipment;
* Assisting with the preparation of foodstuffs, including vegetables, and with the 'potwash';
* Providing any other assistance to the Head Chef & Head of College Catering that might reasonably be requested;
* Maintain Food Hygiene certification, & undertake other relevant training the school may require, including but not limited to H&S, Allergies, First Aid, Manual Handling, Fire Safety and Safeguarding.
Driving & Deliveries
* Delivery of meals to the school's Medical Centre, and presenting it for pupils;
* Delivery of meals to other venues around the campus;
* Delivery of pre-packed/picnic meals to school transport pick-up points;
* Delivery of food and drink to sports locations around campus, and, occasionally, locally;
* When required, delivery of catering equipment & provisions to the Headmaster's house or other venues;
* Any other delivery of provisions or catering equipment around campus that might be requested;
* Loading and unloading products onto the delivery vehicle and making sure that the loads are safely secured;
* Daily inspection of the delivery vehicle, before and after routes are complete;
* Cleaning of the vehicle at the start and end of each shift;
* Returning the vehicle to allocated secure place at the end of each shift, following the key security process;
* Working with the rest of the catering team to lend a hand whenever needed;
* Complying with all Health & Safety requirements in both catering outlets and on the road;
* Any other duties, which may reasonably be asked of you by your Line Manager, or any other designated person within the school.
PERSONAL QUALITIES
This role is likely to suit applicants with previous experience of working in a food production environment who would also enjoy wider contact with the school's many different departments.
Applicants should have a current Food Hygiene certificate (or be willing to obtain one) and be physically fit enough to cope with the demands of the job, which will include loading a vehicle with insulated food boxes, carrying crates of crockery, etc.
In addition, applicants must hold a full UK driving licence and be aged 25+. Evidence of these points will be required from any candidate asked to attend an interview.
A smart appearance, a high standard of personal hygiene and a friendly personality are desirable.

This position is for 30 hours per week, term-time only. These hours will be worked on a fortnightly rota, 5 days one week, 4 days the next. An example of this is shown below:

The weekly rota will be devised by the Catering management team and communicated in good time.
The post-holder will be expected to work occasionally to support school events, including but not limited to: an annual Saturday open-day each June (attendance required 8 am until 6 pm).
There may be the opportunity to work extra hours during school holidays for additional pay, at events held for external customers or to support third party residential group bookings.
SALARY
The hourly rate is GBP 9.07 per hour which equates to a salary of GBP 9,659 (gross) per annum. Salary is paid monthly, in arrears, to a nominated bank account in 12 equal payments. Salary levels are reviewed on 1 September annually and pay for this role will next be reviewed in 2020.
UNIFORM AND FOOD
Certain items of uniform and protective clothing will be provided, including polo shirts, sweatshirts and safety footwear. Laundering of uniform items is the responsibility of the individual.
Staff are not entitled to meals at the College's expense.
HOLIDAYS
This position is entitled pro rata to the statutory holidays. All holiday must be taken outside of normal working hours. Bank holidays which occur during term time are considered to be normal working days.
PROBATION AND NOTICE PERIODS
The first four working months of employment will be a probationary period. During this period conduct and performance will be reviewed. The College may extend the probationary period if it is deemed to be required. During the probationary period the notice required to terminate employment will be one week (by either the employee or employer). The notice period will increase to one month upon the successful completion of the probationary period.
PENSION AND LIFE COVER
After 3 months' employment, employees will be auto-enrolled into the College's pension scheme according to legislative thresholds. Those who are not eligible for auto-enrolment may still elect to join the College's pension scheme.
Initially, when joining the College's pension scheme, employees will become a member of the College's Group Personal Pension Plan (GPP). For this Plan, known as Tier 1, the employee contributes 5% and the employer 3%.
After 9 month's membership of the Tier 1 plan employees may opt to join Tier 2, which is also a Group Personal Pension
Plan and the contributions are 5% from the employee and a 9% contribution from the College.
Employees in Tier 1 automatically qualify for a Life Cover of 2 times salary. On entry to Tier 2 Life Cover changes to 4
times salary.
ENHANCED DISCLOSURE AND BARRING CHECK
