The Mathematics Department
The successful candidate, who will teach throughout the school, will join a thriving Mathematics Department that has 13 teachers. Several teachers have research degrees in various disciplines – Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Physics – so, in due course, may wish to develop their teaching in other areas of the school including Physics and Computer Science. All colleagues find the Mathematics Department a stimulating and collegiate place in which to work and teach. Mathematics teaching at Winchester College satisfies the pupils’ vast appetite for the subject, and its teachers believe that learning in Mathematics should be enjoyable, memorable, rigorous, and challenging. The Mathematics Department enjoys strong links with the Science and Economics Departments; and one of its current members is Mathematics Specialist to the Learning Centre (SEN). It has a flourishing and extensive outreach programme, and strong connections with local state primary, secondary schools, and Winchester’s Sixth Form College.
A huge majority of the pupils in the upper and lower sixth forms (which is recently expanded with the addition of female and day pupils) study Mathematics; and of these nearly half also take Further Mathematics. In Summer 2023, 92% of our GCSE candidates achieved a grade 9-7. At A-level, 83% of entries for Mathematics and Further Mathematics were at A* or A grade. The higher sets throughout the school participate in the various activities of the UKMT, with excellent results.
The Computer Science Department
The Computer Science Department at Winchester continues to go from strength to strength, since the introduction of the subject in 2021.
Year 9 (Junior Part) Computer Science has been delivered to all pupils since 2021, with the course having been designed to develop the skills needed to succeed in IGCSE Computer Science, whilst retaining the breadth and digital skills needed to support all pupils in their wider GCSE subjects. We offer the CAIE IGCSE qualification in Year 10 and Year 11, and there are currently two classes in each year group. The first set of exam results in 2023 were most impressive (98% of pupils achieving grade 9-7). In the Sixth Form we offer OCR A-Level Computer Science with the first Year 12 cohort starting in September 2023. The uptake for the subject has been substantial, with two classes timetabled. Teaching is housed in the Science School with dedicated classrooms for the subject. All pupils and staff have a Surface Pro device, and each classroom is fully equipped to deliver the subject.
Our wider enrichment programme within the Department is developing rapidly and becoming firmly established. Talks are organised throughout the year to bring subject experts into the school. Links with tech companies are being actively fostered. Numerous Societies are supported here within the school, including: GameDevSoc (Game Development Society), TechSoc (Technology Society) and ProgSoc (Programming Society). Pupils have been competing in external competitions, with success in BEBRAS, OUCC, BIO, BAO, Perse, and Cybercenturion settings. As a Department we engage heavily with partnership state schools, offering STEM activities in Computer Science as well as Oxbridge interview practice. Plans are also in train for an overseas Computer Science trip during the next academic year.
The successful candidate will join an experienced Head of Department, and a second established colleague in continuing to develop the subject. Continued Professional Development (CPD) is of crucial importance, and the successful candidate will have access to appropriate training to deliver the courses offered within the Computer Science Department, but also to support their own interests.
All our courses, from Junior Part to A-level, are fully and creatively resourced, but with a range of options for teacher autonomy.
The Junior Fellowship Scheme
The Winchester College Graduate Trainee Teacher (Junior Fellowship) scheme is an exciting opportunity for graduates considering a career in education.
The Junior Fellowship is offered annually on a fixed one-year basis to recent university graduates and has been designed to provide aspiring teachers with the support and training they need to become excellent practitioners both in and outside the classroom.

Outside of the classroom, Junior Fellows support one of our eleven boarding houses and get to know the pupils in a different environment. Extra-curricular involvement will depend on expertise. We have a vast range of sport and cultural activities taking place throughout the week, as well as an extensive trips programme during the holidays in the UK, Europe and further afield.

About Winchester College
In February 2021, Winchester announced a bold new vision and a significant programme of change. ‘Winchester College in the 21st Century’ describes the School’s ambitions for its future and heralds the start of an exciting new phase in Winchester’s development.
Winchester was a pioneering institution when it was founded in 1382 and this new vision will ensure the School continues to be a leader and influencer of great education on the modern global stage. The commitment to provide an intellectual education of exceptional quality and breadth remains unaltered, as do the values which have underpinned Winchester since its foundation. ‘Winchester College in the 21st Century’ will build on these strengths and bring multiple benefits to current and future generations of Wykehamists.
Winchester currently has over 700 pupils. In September 2022, the College welcomed 40 day pupils, including 17 girls, into the Sixth Form and will continue to do so, over time expanding the entry each year to include girl boarders in due course.
Academically, Winchester is among the very best schools in the country and is sought after for its combination of superb teaching, pastoral care, sports, and activities.
At all levels Winchester encourages pupils to look beyond the curriculum. Div is our unique programme of general cultural studies and offers an excellent preparation for university study. In these lessons, pupils engage with a wide range of subjects, from English Literature to Ancient History to the History of Science.
Pupils in the Sixth Form study linear A-level courses and will ordinarily study three A-level subjects and an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) alongside Div. Linear A-levels are complemented by the flexibility of the EPQ where pupils are able to more deeply explore their cross-curricular research interests. The EPQ encourages pupils to develop first-class research skills, to synthesise information from a variety of differing sources, and to become accustomed to the demands of independent study.
Music has been central to life at Winchester ever since its foundation, and the school is unique in having maintained its Choral Foundation to the present day. The Music Department is now one of the leading departments in the country, and offers outstanding opportunities to all.
Sport is a major part of Winchester life. There are many fixtures against other schools, and in 2024 the redevelopment of the sports facilities will see a state-of-the-art complex open that will allow all pupils to enjoy and participate in a variety of sports, whilst simultaneously enabling the most talented and driven pupils to train and compete at the highest level.
Much energy is also invested in the Combined Cadet Force, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Community Service, and in links with local primary and secondary maintained schools. This commitment provides pupils with many opportunities to work for the benefit of others, inside and outside the classroom, developing the knowledge and skills, and the rights and responsibilities, which will enable them to grow into valuable and productive members of society.
Pupils eat all meals in their boarding houses, talking with their Housemaster/mistress, and interacting with friends, visitors, and teachers. We believe that conversational ability, developed both inside and outside the community, equips pupils to talk to anyone, about anything, in practically any situation.
This unparalleled combination attracts pupils from across the world, making Winchester a truly international and diverse community which celebrates every pupil’s individuality, passions and potential.
Winchester College is committed to maintaining the founder’s original intention of offering an outstanding education to any pupil who would benefit from it, regardless of their financial circumstances, and many of the pupils in the College are being helped financially through the school with substantial bursaries.
Diversity and Inclusion
Winchester College is a truly international community that celebrates everyone’s individuality, talents and potential and offers regular training and career development opportunities. We embrace diversity and inclusion in the workplace and are committed to promoting a fair and supportive environment for all our employees. We work hard to create a culture where different perspectives are valued and our staff feel valued for their individuality, and share a sense of belonging. Our aim is to reflect the diverse nature of society and of our pupil body.
Sustainability
