PART I: ABOUT THE DRAMA DEPARTMENT
The Drama Department
Winchester College offers a busy programme of co-curricular drama. Pupils are encouraged to get involved in directing and technical theatre as well as acting. They enjoy working in our theatre, with its deep proscenium stage, auditorium of 240 seats and state-of-the art digital lighting and sound systems. A small but dedicated number of pupils also attend our weekly make-up club or assist with costume design: we are lucky to have a well-stocked theatre wardrobe.
Each year there are approximately six productions. Recent whole-school plays have included A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Merchant of Venice, Death of A Salesman and Oedipus Rex. There are normally three house plays per year, and plays directed by senior pupils are also a longstanding tradition. We aim to tackle a variety of genres throughout the course of the year. In December, we have the Junior Drama Festival, in which the first years of each house perform a thirty-minute play produced by fourth years. There are occasional visiting workshops by professional practitioners, often bespoke for particular productions or GCSE and A-level English set texts. We work closely with the Head of English and Director of Music, and we are hoping to stage a musical in 2023-24.
PART II: ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE LAMDA TEACHER
Overall Responsibilities
We do not offer curricular drama. LAMDA is therefore an important part of our provision, and we have approximately fifty pupils attending lessons each week. Most study acting, public speaking, reading for performance and speaking verse and prose, but there is also some demand for musical theatre.
LAMDA lessons take place during afternoon activity slots on two afternoons of the week (1400-1800 on Tuesdays and Thursdays; we are occasionally able to schedule lessons between 1400-1600 on Mondays and Fridays, but this is often not possible due to pupils’ additional commitments). We are looking for someone who has a proven track record of successfully developing pupils’ skills in acting and public speaking, including success in LAMDA graded examinations. The appointee will also need to be willing to teach across the full range of LAMDA disciplines.

Disclosure Check
As Winchester College is an educational establishment, a condition of employment will be that the successful candidate must consent to the school obtaining an Enhanced Level Disclosure Check through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). This will reveal all spent and unspent convictions, warnings, cautions and bind-overs. A policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders is available on the school’s website.
Safeguarding is one of the primary responsibilities of this role. The jobholder is responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom they are responsible, or with whom they come into contact with, and will need to adhere to and ensure compliance with the school’s Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy at all times. The postholder should be conversant with the responsibilities and procedures detailed in this policy and with the Department for Education’s Keeping Children Safe in Education. If, in the course of carrying out the duties of the post, the LAMDA Teacher becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the school, they must report any concerns to the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead, or in their absence, the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads.
References and Other Pre-employment Checks
The appointment will be dependent upon the receipt of a successful medical check and satisfactory references. The College will usually seek references from shortlisted candidates before interview and may approach previous employers for information to verify particular experience or qualifications. At least one referee must be the current or most recent employer.
Where applicants are not currently working with children but have done so in the past, one referee must be the person by whom they were most recently employed when working with children.
